Based on a corpus study, this paper examines the relevance of pragmatic factors for the choice of the referent of a null object or a clitic in European Portuguese. The results show that both null objects and clitic pronouns are markers of high accessibility like null subjects, referring to referents recently and explicitly mentioned in discourse. However, they differ from null subjects in the absence of prolonged and uninterrupted reference chains, implying that null objects and object clitics have a distinct pragmatic and referential function from null subjects. We also demonstrate that both null objects and clitics preferably refer to antecedents with the syntactic function of an object, a syntactic parallelism that is only slightly attenuated in the case of null objects. Finally, the co-occurrence of both null objects and clitics with subject noun phrases indicates that a realized subject in the same sentence does not intervene in referential binding, and that null objects and clitics represent syntactic alternatives.
Com base num estudo de corpus, este artigo examina o papel de diferentes fatores pragmáticos para a escolha do antecedente de um objeto nulo ou um clítico no português europeu. Os resultados mostram que tanto os objetos nulos quanto os pronomes clíticos são marcadores de alta acessibilidade, referindo-se a referentes recentemente e explicitamente mencionados no discurso, tal como os sujeitos nulos. No entanto, diferem dos sujeitos nulos na ausência de cadeias referencias prolongadas e ininterruptas, o que implica que os objetos nulos e os clíticos de objeto têm uma função pragmática e referencial distinta dos sujeitos nulos. Também mostramos que tanto os objetos nulos como os clíticos se referem preferencialmente a antecedentes com a função sintática de objeto. Isso indica um paralelismo sintático que é ligeiramente atenuado no caso dos objetos nulos. Finalmente, o facto de tanto os objetos nulos como os clíticos coocorrerem com sintagmas nominais sujeito indica que um sujeito realizado na mesma frase não intervém na ligação referencial e que os objetos nulos e clíticos representam alternativas sintáticas.
