In the German language, compound words represent a very common phenomenon of lexical compression, which is why they have been considered a challenge for every learner of German. The possibility of condensing complex and specific information by the help of compound nouns, is especially evident in specialised language. In the course of an earlier study on medical language, this article aims at studying the translation challenge of compound nouns in legal texts from German into European Portuguese. The focus will lie on the text genre letter of request. Compound nouns match perfectly with the abstract characteristics of legal language texts. The aim of this analysis is to show specific aspects of the translation of compound nouns from German into Portuguese. Whereas in German, the formation of compounds follows well-defined structures, the translator into Portuguese is confronted with a variety of different word formations, which must correspond to Portuguese morphosyntactic rules. This analysis aims at bridging the gap concerning compound words in legal language within the above mentioned language pair.
Na língua alemã as palavras compostas constituem um fenómeno muito comum de compressão lexical, constituindo desde sempre um aspeto difícil e característico para todos os que a pretendem dominar. A possibilidade que a língua alemã tem de condensar numa só palavra informação ampla e específica, reflete-se de forma muito evidente nas linguagens de especialidade. Na sequência de um estudo anterior sobre a linguagem da medicina, debruçamo-nos neste artigo sobre os desafios da tradução de palavras compostas de alemão para português no âmbito da linguagem jurídica, em particular do léxico contido no género textual carta rogatória. É de salientar que as palavras compostas se adequam perfeitamente à linguagem abstrata característica dos textos jurídicos. O objetivo desta análise consiste em traçar as especificidades da transferência dos compostos do alemão para português. Enquanto em alemão a formação de palavras compostas segue regras estruturais bem definidas, o tradutor português vê-se perante um leque de estruturas diversas, que o obrigam a respeitar os modelos da construção morfossintática portuguesa. Através desta análise pretende-se contribuir para colmatar a lacuna existente na linguagem jurídica, relativa às palavras compostas, no par de línguas alemão-português europeu.
