Resident's perception of the impacts of tourism on their quality of live, general well-being and happiness

The article is based on the development and testing of a model that describes the relationship between host-tourist interaction (social contact) and residents' perceptions of the impacts caused by tourism in the local community, in their Quality of Life (QOL) and well-being, as well as the influence of the perceptions of these impacts on satisfaction with the development of tourism and, ultimately, how this effect affects the subjective happiness of residents. The model is tested using a survey of residents of the island of São Miguel, in the Azores (Portugal), conducted in 2019. It was found that the level of social contact between host-tourist is relatively low. Residents working in the tourism sector are those who most perceive the impacts of tourism at the economic and social level and the elderly are those who feel the best about living there. It was also concluded that the impacts caused by tourism positively affect residents' satisfaction with the development of the tourism sector today and that this satisfaction, in turn, positively influences the happiness of the resident community.

O artigo assenta no desenvolvimento e teste de um modelo que descreve a relação entre a interação entre os residentes e os turistas (contacto social) e as perceções dos residentes face aos impactes causados pelo turismo na comunidade local, na sua qualidade de vida e bem- estar, bem como a influência das perceções desses impactos sobre a satisfação com o desenvolvimento do turismo e, em última instância, como esse efeito afeta a felicidade subjetiva dos residentes. O modelo é testado recorrendo a um inquérito aos residentes da ilha de São Miguel, nos Açores (Portugal), realizado em 2019. Após a análise dos respetivos dados, verificou- se que o nível de contacto social entre os residentes e os turistas é relativamente baixo. Os residentes que trabalham no setor do turismo são os que mais percecionam impactes do turismo ao nível económico e social e os mais idosos são aqueles que se sentem melhor por viver no local. Concluiu-se, também, que os impactes causados pelo turismo afetam de modo positivo a satisfação dos residentes face ao desenvolvimento do setor turístico na atualidade e que esta satisfação, por sua vez, inuencia de modo positivo a felicidade da comunidade residente.
