For 5 years now, in the University of Warsaw, in the Department of Portuguese and Brasilian Studies, Polish students are improving their skills and knowledge of Portuguese by acting. The plays are all changed and adapted in accordance to the number of students - and there are so many that, right now, and for two years already, we have 3 active groups doing different plays. We also change the language of the plays, so as to make them more modern, so that students can relate to them. The characters and settings are colourful and funny, and the students do have a saying in the making of their characters. After this first stage - changing the texts, building up the characters - comes the serious work: hours and hours of rehearsals, to which students are deeply commited, since for them acting is not only fun, but exciting, creative, and even therapeutic. The intense hours of rehearsing means hours of Portuguese Language practice, during which students improve their accent and absorb inner structures of the language. In the end everybody shares the texts, the jokes that come with it, the funny episodes, and a sort of "community" is created, based on Portuguese Language and Culture. We usually use Gil Vicente's plays, because they are very funny, easily adapted, contemporary, and we all have a deep admiration for this author; but other authors are also used, and now we are preparing a comedy based on Romeo and Juliet, which incorporates many Portuguese specific cultural traits and, of course, the way that cultural identity reflects itself through language.
Na Universidade de Varsóvia tem-se desenvolvido um projecto pioneiro, onde o teatro é um meio importantíssimo de apoio à aprendizagem do Português Língua Estrangeira. O Grupo de Teatro Português da Universidade de Varsóvia, formado em 1997, representou já várias peças: de Gil Vicente, O Auto da Barca do Inferno, O Auto da Índia e A Farsa de "Sónia" Pereira - uma comédia romântica baseada na Farsa de Inês Pereira; de A. Pires Cabral, Uma História Sem Camisa. Todas as peças sofreram adaptações de vários tipos, de modo a que o português utilizado fosse cada vez mais contemporâneo e coloquial, abordando também diferentes registos de língua e de modo a que as personagens fossem mais actuais. Verifica-se que, por razões várias, a fluência dos alunos de PLE melhora significativamente quando fazem teatro português. Os alunos, divertindo-se, melhoram a sua pronúncia, apreendem as estruturas da língua portuguesa, incorporam traços da cultura portuguesa, utilizando a língua por e com prazer.
