During the 1840’s, a new genre appeared in Portuguese theatre. It was called «lyrical farce», and it was largely infl uenced by the French comic opera that was very much performed on the Lisbon stages. It was believed that this new genre would give birth to the future Portuguese opera. In this paper we will present this new form of original Portuguese lyrical composition for theatre.
Nos anos 40 de Oitocentos, teve assinalável êxito um novo género de produção teatral, fortemente inspirado na ópera cómica francesa, que então se fazia representar em Lisboa com alguma regularidade. Neste artigo, contextualizaremos o aparecimento dessa nova forma de teatro original português – denominada «farsa lírica» – e que se acreditou que constituiria o embrião da tão desejada «nova ópera portuguesa».
