Descrição
This article was developed by a team of students of Industrial Engineering and Management at the University of Minho, using the PBL (Project Based Learning) methodology. The purpose of this article is to define alternative layout proposals for the weaving section of the new factory space of a textile company that produces knitted garments and home textiles. It should be noted that defining a layout is crucial for a company to reduce its costs and be able to meet demand. First, a brief contextualization of relevant concepts was conducted. A diagnostic analysis was then performed, which included noise measurements of the current facilities and an analysis of a hypothetical scenario of the new space where all the machines would operate. The measurements taken showed that the noise levels are currently below the lower action level. However, in the hypothetical scenario the exposure limit is exceeded. In the next instance, the existing constraints for defining the layout were identified and three alternative layout proposals were suggested and compared according to metrics such as distances travelled and space available for future machines. In the end, the third proposal proved to be the most suitable, as it had the shortest distance to travel.
