Description
This study analyses the repertoire suggested by 152 Specialised Artistic Education (EAE) music teachers in five public schools in mainland Portugal between the 2018/2019 and 2020/2021 academic years. Through 1034 repertoire entries, trends were identified in terms of the most frequently proposed musical genres, composers and instruments. There was a clear predominance of Western classical music (88.9%), with emphasis on the Contemporary, Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, revealing a markedly traditional and Eurocentric curriculum orientation. The Piano was the instrument with the highest number of suggestions, and Johann Sebastian Bach was the most frequently mentioned composer. There was also a significant number of works with generic technical terminology and a scarce representation of Portuguese, popular or other musical cultures in the repertoire. The analysis highlights the need to diversify the repertoire worked on in EAE schools in order to reflect the cultural and musical plurality of the 21st century. Greater integration of contemporary, popular and national repertoires is recommended, promoting more inclusive and motivating teaching practices that are in line with current educational challenges. This research points to the urgent need to rethink the EAE training model, strengthening its ability to adapt to an ever-changing artistic reality.
