Description

This study focuses on the work of one of the main Portuguese painters from the 16th century, Vasco Fernandes also known as Grão Vasco. For comparative purposes, are addressed in this paper the following paintings attributed to Vasco Fernandes, using different criteria: the São Pedro (awarded in 1607 by Luis Pereira, minister of Viseu’s cathedral), the Tríptico de Cook (signed), the Assunção da Virgem (given along the historiography of art by various historians) and the set of sixteen paintings that constitute the Políptico de Freixo de Espada-à-Cinta (assigned to the Viseu’s school, whose master is Grão Vasco). This sampling approach was followed on all paintings and samples were examined by optical microscopy, SEM-EDS and μ-FTIR.
