Description
In November 2022, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published the Technical Specification CEN/TS 19101:2022, “Design of Fibre-Polymer Composite Structures.” These design provisions, which follow the philosophy and partial factor format of the Eurocodes, are a milestone toward the widespread application of composite materials in civil engineering structures. This paper presents an overview and highlights of CEN/TS 19101:2022. First, the paper provides a brief historical development of CEN/TS 19101:2022 and describes its scope and content. Next, the paper presents selected aspects of these new European design provisions, which required specific original contributions, describing the provided design guidance and explaining its rationale. In particular, the following aspects are highlighted: the basis of design and the definition of partial factors, the determination of material properties used in design verifications, the consideration of the effects of moisture and temperature, the consideration of the effects of creep and fatigue, and the design of adhesive connections and joints. The final part of the paper presents a few concluding remarks, including future developments planned by the Working Group 4 of CEN/TC250.
