THE LAPPIAE DESCRIPTIO BY DAMIÃO DE GÓIS
| Resumo: | It is necessary to observe Damião de Góis’course throughout Europe and his literary production for the period 1528-1540, in order to understand the context that made the portuguese humanist find interest in Lapland and the Sami people and write about the subject. We describe, in few words, the textual history of the Lappiae descriptio and both theses concerning the veracity of his alleged voyage to Lapland. In the end, we present our translation of the Lappiae descriptio. |
