An analysis of environmental standards in the European Union -Mercosur free trade agreement: the uncertainties of the future

Resumo:The EU -Mercosur trade agreement is the result of the redirection of international trade towards bilateral, regional and bi- regional agreements. The European Union, in turn, has adopted new themes in the so -called "new generation agreements", namely environmental standards. The inclusion of the chapter "trade and sustainable development" in the future EU -Mercosur Trade Agreement establishes an "agenda" of commitments for the implementation of environmental standards, based on international environmental protection treaties and conventions, and on the regulatory convergence between the two parties. This article analyzes the possible consequences of the implementation of these standards and the uncertainties of the Agreement’s future.
