Manutenção de necessidade psicológicas, adesão à prática de exercício e aptidão física-funcional: um estudo de caracterização dos participantes do Programa Ser Ativo - Ilha Terceira-Açores
| Resumo: | Introduction: This characterization study focuses on a pertinent issue at present, since it seeks to understand some factors that lead individuals to maintain active behaviors at advanced ages, considering the circumstances in which, possibly, these reasons manifest themselves. In this sense, the objective of this work was to verify the influence of participation in different community programs of systematic physical activity on psychological needs, adherence to exercise, and the maintenance of an active lifestyle in the population of Terceira Island in the Azores. Methods: The sample had approximately 78 elderly people, of both sexes, aged between 50 and 80 years. Data were collected from participants living in 10 parishes (Porto Martins, Casa da Ribeira, Agualva, Biscoitos, São Brás, Juncal, Fontinhas, Lages, Fonte Bastardo, Quatro Ribeiras), who regularly participated in a weekly multi-component exercise program at the City Hall facilities. The following data were collected: i) physical fitness: balance, walking speed and resistance of lower limbs, ii) anthropometric evaluation and body composition: weight, height, waist and hip perimeter, percentage of fat, muscle mass, body water, visceral fat, bone mass; iii) overall health evaluation: medication, comorbidities, iv) evaluation of psychological needs and adherence to the practice of exercise: motivation and quality of life the third parameter was evaluated through questionnaires. Results: With these results we realized that the participants of 3 or more sessions are more healthy and physically more active than those who only participated 1 or 2 times. Conclusions: It was verified that the people who practice more physical exercise are the ones who have less comorbidities, consume less medication and feel happier and more fulfilled. |
