The Impact of Culture on Career Management

Resumo:The main purpose of this investigation is to analyse how culture impacts the career management of an individual. More specifically, the effects of culture on the individual in terms of career adaptability variables. Thus, it is intended to understand how Individualism, Masculinity, Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Long Term Orientation, and Indulgence impact Career Management. To analyse the relationships described above, it was adopted as an instrument of data collection, a survey by questionnaire intended for Portuguese and Brazilian people. The survey had the participation of a total of 311 respondents (174 Portuguese and 134 Brazilians, being completed by other nationalities). The results confirm the positive relationship between the variables as was expected: Individualism, Masculinity, Power Distance, and Long-term Orientation are positively correlated to Career Management, while Uncertainty Avoidance and Indulgence are negatively correlated to Career Management. Finally, this study sheds light on the relation between culture and career, being important for the understanding of how organizations can promote workplaces tailored to each individual by understanding each worker's cultural background.
