Resumo:We intend to discuss the opportunities that the spaces of non-formal education provide to the implementation of a teaching and learning that demonstrates the use of mathematics in social and cultural contexts. The discussion is based on a study developed under the supervised teaching practice in basic education and in which was planned, implemented and evaluated a visit to the Garden «Jardim do Paço» of Castelo Branco. To support the visit was created a set of tasks that aimed ative learning of mathematics and, at the same time, intended to sensitize students to its presence of mathematics in the world around us. We report one of the tasks proposed to students in the Garden and we analyze and discuss the results of the activity, as well as free texts and drawings carried out in the classroom after the visit. The resolution of the task required the mobilization and application of mathematical knowledge in real contexts, contributing to a contextualized mathematics learning. The engagement, joy and motivation expressed by students in carrying out the activities indicate a strong interaction between the two contexts, formal (school) and non-formal (The Garden - Jardim do Paço de Castelo Branco).
