The potential impact of Leixões’ cruise ships on tourism development of North of Portugal: reflections from a literature review
| Summary: | This article performs a review of the literature on the cruise tourism theme and its potential effects in the development of the host regions as a tourism destination, using the case study of the cruise tourism in Port of Leixões, - which was reviewed through a SWOT analysis and served as a basis for presenting recommendations, considered pertinent by academics and tourism stakeholders. The analysis undertaken aims to provide a summarised view of the main challenges brought about by the development of Leixões’ cruise tourism for the North of Portugal tourism, based mainly on a selection of information taken from different official worldwide reports, press releases and previous academic and professional views. From the analysis, it is apparent there is a great potential for Tourism of North of Portugal, but there is still a need to find better solutions of the existing and upcoming obstacles of the most dynamic sector of the travel and leisure industry in tourism development: maritime cruises. |
