The view of millennial men in the Netherlands on gender equality and the achievement thereof

Resumo:This thesis aims to create a better understanding of the view of millennial men in the Netherlands on gender equality and the achievement thereof. Gender equality tends to be recognized as a battle only women are responsible to fight for. However, we need the whole of society to tackle this global development issue: the issues around gender equality impact all. Nevertheless, they are not defended by all. Ten millennials within the Netherlands, divided over three Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), have shared their opinions and views. Within the analysis, the theory of ‘hegemonic masculinity’, which covers the dominance of men over women within society, was used in analyzing the results of the study. Additionally, the perception of millennials was taken into account. The study's results and analysis revealed four categories, covering the participants' opinions. First, the participants recognize the broader concept of general equality, second, they believe in the need for equal treatment between men and women, third, they believe that the achievement of gender equality is something positive, and finally, they believe that there are biological differences between men and women, yet they argue that therefore reaching full gender equality is impossible. The categories portray opportunities but also challenges to include more men in the achievement of gender equality. The opportunities reveal that men do believe that the achievement of gender equality is positive. The challenges cover that there are rather traditional views involving gender stereotyping which is harmful for the achievement of gender equality.
