Summary:Introduction: Communication with families of children with chronic conditions who need medical devices is fundamental but often undervalued. Objective: To identify the stages and components of an algorithm to guide communication with families of children with chronic conditions with an indication for placement of a medical device. Methods: Three focus group sessions were held, involving health professionals and family members, with a total of 11 participants. In the first session, participants shared their experiences and contributed to the construction of the algorithm. The following sessions were dedicated to analyzing the preliminary version of the algorithm. Results: Analysis of the first session confirmed the absence of communication protocols, the importance of interdisciplinary planning and communication, and the potential contribution of an algorithm to bridge these gaps. Three main moments were identified in the communication process: preparing for information, communicating the news and communicating to empower the family. In the following meetings, the preliminary algorithm was revised, with suggestions for improvements, such as the need for interdisciplinary meetings, the reinforcement of emotional and practical support for families, resulting in the final version of the algorithm. Conclusion: The steps and components identified in the algorithm show their potential as a dynamic resource, adjustable to the specificities of each family. Its codesign constitutes a procedure during communication processes with families dealing with the placement of medical devices.
