Diogo Pacheco, captain of the first Portuguese expedition to Australia in 1519
| Summary: | Many uncertainties, conjectures, enigmas and mysteries surround the discovery of Australia by the Europeans, but there is one fact that no one nowadays dares to contest: Australia was discovered by the Portuguese. Yet who really was the first person to discover it? Various names have been put forward, including António de Abreu, Diogo Pacheco, Cristóvão de Mendonça and Gomes de Sequeira. In this study we aim to demonstrate, in the light of documentary evidence, that the first Portuguese citizen to lead a Portuguese expedition to Australia was Diogo Pacheco, in 1519. |
