Light pollution prevention: design of a public streetlight fixture

Resumo:Light pollution can be defined as any adverse effect caused by the inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light, having a wide range of negative impacts on human health, biodiversity, the observation of the night sky and the economy. These effects have been made worse with the expanding use of white LED technology on public street lighting. Portugal has consistently underperformed in rankings for emission of light per capita, emission per GDP and average light emitted in its territories, leading to the bigger pertinence of mitigation of light pollution at a national level. This dissertation investigates the causes, effects, and impacts of light pollution, focusing on how streetlighting can be designed to prevent it without ignoring other benefits provided by public lighting. An approach was taken to predict light emitted upwards by different light installation parameters, such as height, spacing and flux amount, leading to the recommendation of which parameters could be more adequate for a context, serving as grounds for comparing light pollution caused by luminaires. A streetlight fixture design concept is then explored, utilizing the findings from the investigation phase for better light pollution mitigation. The project development had an exploratory nature, with the initial ideation of multiple concepts, a phase of development of the chosen concept, its validation, and culminating in the proposal of an LED streetlight fixture, that utilizes a modular solution for greater adaptability to different contexts, and that contributes to the prevention of light pollution through design and engineering solutions used throughout the project’s process.
