Practices of reading and writing at work in teams in Project-Based Learning

Resumo:The aim of this paper is to reflect on the practices of reading and writing in teamwork of a PBL methodology with students of the Master Integrated in Industrial Engineering and Management (MIIEM) in the first semester of the 1st year in 2013/2014, at University of Minho, Portugal. Teamwork is one of the advantages of Project-Based Learning (PBL), as it requires a joint effort on the part of students, teachers and tutors. Also, teamwork is a competence to be learn by the students, especially when it comes to the context of future engineers; this aspect will be the common good in their professional performances, for the engineer working in teams. However, in the perception of students, they have some difficulties with the PBL approach which demands their organization in teams and that they manage a project, make decisions and find solutions. This is a complex process for students and for this reason one of the most common problems of the teams associated with the project management and time management. To better manage their time, students divide tasks within the group in accordance with the competencies of each and this also happens with the writing of reports, where the most pro-efficient and “knack" for writing will have this task. This division will thus cover up the problems of students with less talent to do this. This article discusses this issue using some preliminary data from a survey submitted to students.
