Dropout intention as a threat to higher education students’ well-being
| Summary: | The periods of transition throughout lifespan development are inherently challenging. One of the most significant is the transition from adolescence to adulthood, coinciding with the move from Secondary Education to Higher Education. During this period of emerging adulthood, young adults face a series of challenges and difficulties that will require them to mobilize personal resources, activating internal coping mechanisms. Higher education students present higher levels of psychological distress compared to the general population. This distress is frequently related to feelings of uncertainty and anxiety about the implications of present decisions for their future. These uncertainties can gradually impact students’ thoughts and behaviors. This chapter aims to delve into the complexities of experiencing such doubts and the development of dropout intentions, shedding light on how these factors can significantly impact overall well-being, academic performance and dropout. Understanding these challenges could inform interventions to support individuals navigating these critical moments in their educational and personal development. |
