Aotearoa New Zealand Fiction in European Portuguese Translation: Linguistic Hybridity and Biculturalism

Resumo:Although at certain times there seem to be spikes of interest, on the part of Portugal, in Aotearoa New Zealand, the cultural flows and other connections that can be established between the two countries are few and far between. That certainly extends to literature. There is still a relatively small amount of Aotearoa New Zealand fiction published in European Portuguese translation. Furthermore, within that body of work, there are what seem like obvious omissions and some puzzling choices that are not representative of a national literature which, at the very least, is a lot more diversified than the Portuguese catalogue indicates. This thesis proposes to analyse the body of Aotearoa New Zealand literature that has been translated into European Portuguese and attempt to draw conclusions about the representation of biculturalism in it, as it is conveyed through linguistic hybridity present in the STs. Linguistic hybridity is a feature not only of Aotearoa New Zealand literature, but also of New Zealand English (NZE), and it is fostered by cultural phenomena as well as by deliberate official language policies. The main focus of the thesis will be on the translation strategies adopted by Portuguese translations in their efforts to deal with the linguistic hybridity that is to be found in works of literature from Aotearoa New Zealand, and the implications that those strategies have for the depiction of biculturalism, Aotearoa New Zealand’s official cultural policy, within the body of Aotearoa New Zealand literary work in European Portuguese translation.
