Resumo:In this dissertation, I show that promoting local and community-based action can help address deficient formal institutions and state capacity problems in emerging and low-income countries. Specifically, I explore (i) the effect of election observers on electoral fraud, (ii) how parental involvement in children’s education can be fostered, and (iii) the role of information provision in disaster preparation. I use data collected from field experiments in Mozambique and Angola to study these topics.
