Corporations in Lisbon (15th-17th centuries)

Resumo:The present article aims to constitute a state of the question regarding the complex and diversified problem of the corporations of trades in Lisbon between the 15th and 17th centuries, with special attention to the corporations of artistic trades. In this sense, methodologically, fundamental concepts (craft guild, municipal posture, "arruamento", craft regiment, confraternity, brotherhood, commitment, flag of craft, among others) are studied in depth, the institutional mechanisms essential to the daily functioning of the guilds are identified - namely, the House of Twenty-four of Lisbon (“Casa dos Vinte e Quatro de Lisboa”) and the Senate of the City Council (“Senado da Câmara”) - and the operationality of urban administration is explored taking into account new realities such as the Hospital Real de Todos-os-Santos. The analysis to be developed, in turn, has as background the relevance of corporations, the urban framework and the patron churches. As model examples we address the specific cases of goldsmiths, painters, and carpenters/stonemasons. The presentation of relevant bibliography, recent and old, as well as of nuclear documentary funds for this type of research are another priority. Finally, we present new proposals of lines of study concerning the guilds in Lisbon in the chronology in question.
