Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:The evolving security landscape that we live today has left National Defence in the agendas of the Western Nations, with Portugal being no exception. The need for a resilient, adaptive and strategically aligned (with the current events) Defence Policy has become a pressing matter. Based in the internship experience at the National Defence Policy General Directorate, this report analyses how NATO impacts the Portuguese Defence Policy and, at the same time, how Portugal aligns itself with NATO’s Collective Security and Defence objectives. It focuses on the support towards Ukraine, in Defence Industry development and the fulfilment of current NATO pledges. Overall, the Portuguese National Defence Policy is not developed in isolation but rather shaped by international commitments, by the geopolitical and geostrategic environments and by Portugal’s objectives and values as a Nation. Furthermore, this report also finds that there exist the needs to develop a new Strategic National Defence Concept, to invest in the Portuguese Defence Industry, to enhance procurement practices and to maintain strategic cooperation Alliances. At the end, a strategic balance between domestic interests and international obligations is what is ensures Portugal in becoming a credible Global Security Partner and Ally.
