An Analysis of the Role of Artificial Intelligence in European Smart Cities

Resumo:This research is focused on understanding what drives users to adopt smart city systems, particularly those that contain artificial intelligence as their main source of power, and what outcomes we can assert from it. This was done by leveraging the topic of technology acceptance and how it impacts consumers’ lives. This was achieved by splitting the antecedents into drivers and barriers to usage intention and focusing only on behavioral outcomes. The model was tested based on a survey with 211 individuals from Portugal consumers and using structural equation modeling technique. The main findings showed that the constructs of feelings of power, user experience, and accessibility played a significant role in driving users to adopt smart city systems, while human error and the risks associated hindered the adoption. Finally, it was found that the individual's intention has a positive impact on both wellbeing and perception of the user's impact on his daily life.
