Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Common and Uncommon Peroneal Tendons Disorders

Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:Abstract The peroneus brevis and peroneus longus tendons act as dynamic lateral ankle stabilizers. These tendons can present several variants that may predispose to tendon stress or be misdiagnosed as tendon tears. Moreover, the peroneal tendons can be affected by several conditions: some associated with the tendons themselves (tendinosis, tendons tears and intratendinous ganglion cysts) and others related to the tendon sheaths (such as tenosynovitis and pigmented villonodular synovitis). Lastly, other disorders are related to laxity or injury of the superior peroneal retinaculum (SPR), the most important structure concerning peroneal tendon stability. Some peroneal disorders are often clinically overlooked and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an essential tool in the assessment of patients with recurrent lateral ankle complaints. Our goal is to review and illustrate common and uncommon peroneal anatomical variants and disorders that can be found on MRI studies.
