Spatial analysis of the socio-environmental impacts caused by the breach of two mining tailings dams: Fundão, in the city of Mariana, and Corrego do Feijão, in the municipality of Brumadinho (Minas Gerais - Brazil)
| Resumo: | We present the results an analysis into the spatial and socio-environmental impacts caused by the failure of the Fundão dam belonging to a mining company, Samarco, in the city of Mariana (2015) and of dam I of the Córrego do Feijão Mine owned by Vale S.A, in the municipality of Brumadinho (2019) in Minas Gerais, Brazil. A qualitative approach of an analytical-interpretative and descriptive nature was adopted, based on a literature review of studies on the topic of dam risks published in documentary and journalistic sources, and scientific journals. The analysis of statistical data released by official bodies, the transparency of the actions taken by the operations command system, and the strategic structure that brought together all the teams involved in the rescue work, were relevant to understanding the mitigation processes of the impacts, recovery, and resilience in emergency situations. Georeferencing and geo-mapping research enabled the assessment of spatial and socio-environmental impacts. |
