Responsible innovation and the role of organizational structure and culture in sustainability: a multiple case study of chilean wineries
| Resumo: | In a world where environmental and social challenges demand urgent action, sustainability has evolved from an aspiration to a strategic imperative for organizations. This study examines how organizational structures and culture influence the adoption of sustainable innovations in wineries. Using a qualitative multiple case study approach, the research analyzes two Chilean wineries through semi-structured interviews and company documents to explore their sustainability integration strategies. The findings highlight the crucial role of organizational structure in sustainability implementation. Centralized structures provide strategic consistency but limit agility, while decentralized models enhance collaboration and adaptability. In terms of culture, structured approaches prioritize training and efficiency, whereas experimental and inclusive environments foster stakeholder engagement and more dynamic sustainability initiatives. These structural and cultural differences shape the application of responsible innovation principles, particularly anticipation, reflexivity, inclusion, and responsiveness. This research contributes to the theoretical framework of Responsible Innovation by providing empirical evidence on how organizational structures and cultures influence sustainability efforts. From a practical perspective, it offers insights for wineries and other industries seeking to enhance their sustainability strategies, emphasizing the importance of organizational design, communication, and standardized sustainability reporting. |
