Terapêutica biológica na doença inflamatória intestinal : revisão bibliográfica
| Resumo: | Inflammatory Bowel Diseases represent a heterogeneous group of inflammatory conditions which include Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Undetermined Colitis. Although IBD etiology remains unknown, a better understanding in the last decade, of the effect of gut mucosal cytokines and their importance in the inflammatory cascade have led to the development of several drugs with selective targets in the immune pathway, such as the Tumor Necrosis Factor. These drugs have revolutionized the management of IBD by offering a therapeutic chance to patients in whom conventional therapies failed and allowing significant improvement to the patients’ quality of life. However, the high costs of biologic drugs, together with the increased risk of infections and malignancies, have led to debate regarding their indiscriminate use in IBD patients. This work intends to serve as a current systematic review, focusing on the efficacy, safety profile and costeffectiveness of the biologic therapies as well as their use as an alternative to current conventional treatments. |
