Resumo:Difficult to diagnose, so frequently underestimated, illusive but so harmful, Obsessive-Compulsive Disease (OCS) is still poorly understood, even if accounts more than 4% of Portuguese citizens. This study was developed through an interview supported by the Y-Bocs and Brief Psychiatric Rating scales to know the prevalence of OCD symptoms and their relation with mental health and demographic aspects of patients who recurred to USF Rodrigues Miguéis (a Portuguese primary care center). Prevalence for moderate and severe disease were found to be three times the ones known for the general population, with one in every three respondents showing signs of mild or even subclinical disease. It was also noted the frequent association between these symptoms and anxiety or depression. The fact that the majority of symptomatic individuals were followed in a psychiatric consult, mostly for other psychiatric diseases, others than OCD, shows how important it is to actively search for these symptoms and the need to think of these as the origin of other psychiatric illnesses, also stressing the heavy social and economic implications of the non-diagnosis of this disease which manifest itself since early adulthood and remains unchanged throughout the working life of the individual.
