A cultura balnear na Costa do Sol : para um museu da praia

Resumo:Due to the exceptional weather, climatic and morphologic characteristics of the west region of Lisbon, seaside holidaying was born and grew in Costa do Sol in Portugal. Sea bathing first started for therapeutic reasons, but it was quickly transformed into a hedonistic pleasure of seaside leisure. As from the end of the 19th century, this new experience took roots in the habits and customs of coastal populations bringing great change to mentalities and promoting the progress of this entire coast. Beach going made room for freer social behaviours, in a space where the body is the leading player. Structures and equipments for beach goers were built around the beach. Seaside resorts were born and new life styles were created. The whole landscape of Costa do Sol was shaped around the fashion of seaside holidaying. For the great importance it has acquired in the history of leisure and tourism, for the marks it has left on the landscape, on the history of customs and mentalities, a true beach going culture can be identified. Some testimonies of this culture are presented in this document, organised as an archive of beach going tradition, the first collection of a broad set of documents on the topic. Based on theories and practices of the new museology and on the widening of the concept of heritage, this study proposes the creation of the Beach Museum. With the aim of identifying, studying, valuing and preserving testimonies of beach going culture, the Museum will be a fundamental institution in the disclosure and protection of the natural, material and intangible heritage that has shaped the identity of Costa do Sol
