Resumo:This study aimed to evaluate the utilization of compound feeds in the diet of sports horses bred in Portugal, according to their different physiological stages and main future use. For this purpose a survey was conducted and 31 stud-farms which produce horses for seven equestrian disciplines were visited. The group of broodmares had a lower level of compound feeds included in the diet, although the higher use of specific compound feed was observed in lactating mares (29% of the farms). Foals from weaning to one year old receive specific compound feed in 65% of the stud-farms, as opposed to the 2 and 3 years old foals which received 20 and 16%, respectively. Stallions and horses that were in training receive basic compound feed in more than 70% of the farms. The results showed a good management in general, but there were not any specific differences in the feeding management in what concerns broodmares and foals and no specific criteria related to the future sportive use of the foals were followed. However, in the horses that were in training, a special care with the use of specific compound feed was observed, being more evident in “jumping”, “endurance” and “race” horses
