Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:Physical exercise has a protective effect against depression and a positive effect on the treatment of depression in a non-clinical context and clinical populations. Objective: This systematic review aimed to analyse the relationship between team sports practice and depression symptoms. Methods: Articles published up to December 2021 were located using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. A total of 16 studies were selected. To be included in the review, publications were required to meet the following criteria: (1) contain relevant data oncerning depression and team sports practice; (2) be written in English. Studies were excluded because they: (1) did not contain any relevant data concerning depression and team sports practice; and (2) were review articles or conference abstracts. Results: Of these sixteen studies, ten were found a positive association between team sports practice and depression symptoms. Furthermore, regarding the six studies with no positive correlation, it is important to highlight that four of them had similar values of depression compared to the control group or general population values. Conclusion: This study found that in non-professional athletes, team sports might reduce depression severity to lower scores than the general population.
