Pedro Carlos dos Reis
| Resumo: | Pedro Carlos dos Reis, born in Lisbon in the year of 1819, is considered a romantic artist and known as the sculptor of a statue located in the city of Setúbal, representing Bocage (a portuguese poet of the late 18th century). Pedro Carlos dos Reis also dedicated himself to drawing; his drawings Collection in the Museum of Setúbal / Convent of Jesus (Museu de Setúbal / Convento de Jesus) is a valued oeuvre in the national artistic scene and a testimony to the work developed by the artist. He died in 1893, aged 74 years old. Son of the sculptor Constantino José Quádrio dos Reis (1778-1865), his father was a Professor of sculpture in the Fine Arts Academy of Oporto. Pedro Carlos dos Reis was a disciple of Faustino José Rodrigues, as well of his own father, and Assistant to Machado de Castro. Involved in one of the events that most marked the academic life of the Fine Arts Academy of Lisbon between 1856 and 1860, he was one of the candidates for a sculpture professorship during a competition promoted by the Director of the Academy, Francisco Assis Rodrigues. He was up against such names as Vitor Bastos, Manuel Maria Bordalo Pinheiro e José Maria Caggiani. The number of his works present in the Museum of Setúbal Collection, as well as in the private collection of his great-grandson, Mestre Manuel Guimarães dos Reis, is vast and diverse. The bulk of the work is composed by sketch drawings and studies made during his lifetime. These address different subjects, such as the Academies, satire, studies for statues and tombs, face portraits, lettering studies, illustrations for the newspapers and magazines of the time, among other themes. His drawings, made in quick dashes, reveal a spirit of study and search of technical perfection by the artist |
