Liminal blue: escapismo através de universos paralelos num futuro distópico
| Resumo: | The project for the Master’s in Drawing aims to create the first volume of the graphic novel Liminal Blue, which serves as a foundation to explore the author’s relationship with her art and to question her influences. The work addresses themes of dystopian futures, escapism, and the relationship between humans, art, and technology. The dissertation is divided into two parts: a theoretical component, which analyzes the evolution of the dystopian genre and various modes of escapism in contemporary culture; and a second, in the form of a report on the creative process accompanied by project documentation, which details the development of the graphic novel, including narrative and aesthetic choices. The theoretical section explores the history of the dystopian genre, its transformations over time, and the ways it is communicated and interpreted through different narratives, including variations within the concept of the “multiverse”. Following this, the discussion turns to escapism and its various forms of expression, including an analysis of contemporary phenomena such as reality shifting and fanfiction, with an emphasis on the self-insert subgenre, reflecting on how these elements allow for the author's projection into the narrative and serve as a creative escape valve. In the report, the development of Liminal Blue is approached through the adaptation of cinematic techniques to the language of comics, exploring the translation of the author’s vision from one medium to another at each stage of the creative process. The narrative of the protagonist, Mags, serves as an opportunity to reflect traits of the author herself while simultaneously expressing the concerns of a broader community. Finally, the concluding remarks underscore the project’s technical and emotional impact, highlighting the relevance of the dystopian genre and escapism as vehicles for self-discovery and artistic expression. |
