Transformation of solidarities, transformation of statehood: a migration perspective

Resumo:This closing article of a special issue on pro-migrant solidarities refects on the evolution of literature surrounding international migrations and solidarities over the past decade. Central to our analysis is the observation that the transformation of solidarities corresponds intricately with the rescaling of statehood, marked by its increasingly transnational nature. As states undergo processes of reconfguration and disengagement, a simultaneous reallocation of public funds towards entities engaged in the solidarity “industry” emerges. This phenomenon stands in contrast to spontaneous solidarity movements and acts of resistance, which collectively represent a spectrum of responses. The Special Issue’s fve articles explore diverse facets of this complex landscape, drawing on local and regional cases from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. By delving into spatial and temporal considerations, we illuminate how the where and when of solidarities transcend traditional categorisations based on actors’ types or motives. This approach helps elucidate the proliferation of solidarity forms, ofering insights into the dynamic interplay between statehood, transnationalism, solidarity, and migration. As we navigate the intricate tapestry of pro-migrant solidarities, our analysis underscores the need for nuanced perspectives that account for the multifaceted dimensions of solidarity in an ever-evolving global context.
