Resumo:Travelling for dental treatments is considered the most frequent form of medical tourism with more than five million dental tourists worldwide. These patients travel at any time of the year, have long lengths of stay and high personal expenditures. The first objective was to develop a willingness-to-pay study regarding the English population to acknowledge if Lisbon is on their “fly time radius” and if the price they are willing to pay is compatible with current prices for England – Lisbon airfare, hotel nights in Lisbon and dental treatments provided by Portuguese dentists. The second objective was the construction and validation of a quantitative scale to measure which motivational factors affect English tourists’ selection of a dental tourism destination, suggesting which elements a promotional campaign should focus on. The results confirm that Lisbon is within the range of the number of hours they are willing to fly (3 to 4 hours) and the airfare they are willing to pay (200£ to 300£). Additionally, the accommodation price per night they are willing to pay (100£ to 120£) is compatible with the average daily rate of four- and five-star hotels in Lisbon, mainly for months in the mid and low season. Finally, the values they are looking for in terms of dental implants (500£ to 750£) fit the range that is practised in Portugal. In case English patients decide to travel abroad to perform specialized dental treatments, their main concerns will be related to “Quality, Safety and Affordability” of the treatments. Patients highlight the dental clinics with accreditation seals, the dentist’s credible CV, state of the art technology, continuity of care and warranty of treatments. More than lower costs, they are looking for fraction of payments or support through financial services. The second latent factor obtained is “Hospitality & Comfort”, which can be interpreted as a duplication of some of the resources they would have at home after being submitted to surgery. The need for special services adapted to surgery requirements represent additional business opportunities. Hotels and dental clinics should develop key partnerships to mutually promote dental tourism.
