Potential and constraints of evaporative cooling: simulation of climat potential and monitoring campaign on portable units
| Resumo: | Considering nowadays concerns regarding energy saving measures, we set out to study evaporative cooling as a viable alternative to traditional air conditioning. In the first part of this work we estimate the weather potential for this type of technology in Portugal and Genève. In order to do that we then developed a way to quantify that potential and create indicators in order to present the obtained data. In this estimation evaporative cooling is considered to be a part of a ventilation system. Different parameters were analyzed such as ventilation system configurations (direct and indirect evaporative cooling), comfort temperatures (fix value and adaptive approach), evaporative cooler efficiencies and period of cooling utilization. The second part is a case study description. A monitoring campaign was made to compare portable evaporative cooling units with portable air conditioning units in Geneva. The description of the monitoring campaign and some preliminary results are presented. |
