Europe in the mirror of Germany : to what extent does German unification (1815-1888) prefigure the unification of Europe (1947,-…)?

Resumo:The future development of the process of European unification, which began in 1 947, is examined by comparing it with the process leading to the unification of Germany between 1815 and 1888. The priority of economic unification over political unification and, in the economic field of commercial unification over monetary unification are clear similarities. The different degree of cultural homogeneity and the pace of the political unification process are clear differences. The possibility of economic unification without political unification and the accomplishment by peaceful means of the political unification of such heterogeneous nations as the European ones must necessarily remain open questions.
