Contralateral breast cancer : a new incidence pattern?

Resumo:Purpose: There is now an increasing population of breast cancer (BC) survivors, who are at risk of developing contralateral breast cancer (CBC). However, recent studies suggest that CBC incidence is decreasing. This study was undertaken to determine CBC incidence on the modern population of BC patients. Patients and Methods: We analyzed a cohort of 655 patients surgically treated with the diagnosis of first primary BC between January 2002 and December 2003. Overall CBC incidence was estimated in person-years at risk and cumulative incidence of CBC was estimated using the Nelson-Aalen estimator. Results: 26 cases of CBC were registered, 75% of these occurred within the first 5,5 years after the first BC. The cohort overall incidence rate is 6,6 per 1000 person-years at risk (95% CI 4,4-9,8). The 5-year and 10-year cumulative incidence is 3,1% (95%CI 1,7-4,6) and 5,5% (95% CI 3,2-7,8) respectively. Conclusion: We found a 10 year cumulative incidence lower than previously reported. More than two thirds of CBC cases were diagnosed within 5 years after the first BC.
