Altice Portugal : racing to 5G

Resumo:The following Thesis portraits the challenges that a company faces when a disruptive innovation is introduced in a technology-based industry. Thus, the Case Study depicts the strategic dilemma that Altice faced in 2019 when 5G technology was introduced in the telecommunications market. The evaluation of the company’s strategic alternatives regarding the deployment of the technology, considering internal and external factors and possible risks related to it is a broadly discussed topic in this paper. Additionally, the analysis of the Case aims to portrait the reality of the highly-competitive environment of the telecommunications industry and how the market responds to the introduction of new technology. This Thesis consists of three main parts: the Case Study, the Literature Review of related topics and the Teaching Note that offers an analysis of the Case. It discusses aspects related to the strategy of the operator, the industry structure and the alternatives that the company is faced with when deciding the implementation strategy for the technology. From the analysis of the Case it is possible to conclude that preserving the telecommunication’s operator cost leadership strategy through the creation of a strategic alliance is the right call to ensure the continuity of its success in the face of the introduction of a disruptive technology. Additionally, it explains how the choice of strategy was based on ensuring the continuity of the company’s profitability and responding to the growing needs of the consumers.
