The CNN Satellite Channels and Their Differences: CNN Portugal Versus CNN Prima News

Ver documento

Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:The international expansion of CNN evolved with the sale of brand licenses for the creation of independent affiliate channels. These television stations carry the CNN name, image, and style but are tailored to domestic audiences. The first such channel was CNN Türk, launched in 1999, and by 2025 multiple channels had been launched worldwide, although not all remain active. Each channel has some specific characteristics, and their news programs often feature distinct styles. This article aimed to identify the main differences between the news broadcasts of two affiliates, CNN Portugal (Portugal) and CNN Prima News (Czechia), focusing on how information is presented, whether the main topics are the same, and whether they include content from other CNN channels. Fourteen broadcasts from each station were analyzed, seven aired at 9:00 and seven at 19:00, using the constructed-week method. The results confirmed that, despite sharing the CNN brand, the two channels differ in newscast composition, topic selection, and the use of CNN’s global network. It was concluded that these are independent local channels, focused on domestic audiences, while incorporating practices and elements of the original brand.
