Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:The present report refers to the journalistic immersion experience of simulated coverage of urgent facts carried out with three classes of a journalism course in 2017, 2018 and 2019. By creating a controlled environment that simulated the newsroom of a major news portal, the students were invited to carry out real-time coverage of historical events, such as the attacks of September 11, 2001. The exercise was based on the teacher's experience in newsrooms and the “Covering Crisis and Catastrophes” training offered by Reuters. To carry out the simulation, the students watched recordings of live coverage from television stations simulating the moment of the events and the teacher acted as a “news agency”, providing basic information to the students, who had to write notes and publish them on a simulated website using the WordPress platform. The exercise was carried out for the first time in December 2017 and repeated with other classes in June 2018 and March 2019, at the students' request. The simulations presented the journalism students with a series of challenges, such as making decisions quickly, being agile in writing and publishing, and being accurate in establishing the facts. The results also point to students who were extremely involved in the activity, learning about crisis management in newsrooms and about historical facts, and to a positive evaluation of the use of immersive simulations in journalism teaching.
