The Health Crisis From the Perspective of the Alternative Party Press in Portugal
| Resumo: | This article presents results from the analysis of two months of journalistic coverage about COVID-19 upon the arrival of the pandemic in Portugal by four alternative media linked directly or indirectly to political parties: the newspapers Avante and Acção Socialista and the portals Esquerda.Net and Abril Abril. In total, a volume of journalistic content totaling 2,368 pages of text and images published in editions of the four selected initiatives between March and April 2020 was identified, read, categorized, and systematized within an analysis framework. As part of a broader research project, the results discussed here are also supported by interviews conducted with six editorial and political representatives of the journalistic outlets analyzed. It points out as the main editorial priorities of most of these vehicles the defense of public policies, the denunciation of the private-business sector for trying to profit from the health crisis, the vocalization of attacks and disrespect for workers' rights and the criticism of the European Union's stance during a tragedy that affected the poorest countries in the bloc. |
