Old and new farmers in Portugal

Resumo:Portuguese agriculture and Portugal's rural areas have always figured in a large number of works. Recently there has been increased interest in these areas and a few innovative works have appeared. The subject has been analysed from a number of different angles: - agronomical, economic, sociological, anthropological and historical. This article does not attempt to analyse these studies of rural areas in Portugal, but discusses the two main approaches which act as sources of information: 1) the wide approach which tends to dilute the specifics of agriculture as an economic activity; 2) the narrow approach which concentrates on local analyses and an examination of the specific traits of agriculture and local communities. What seems most important in the confrontation between these two types of approach is the formation of a data-base and of analyses which point quite plainly to the economic and social heterogeneity of Portuguese agriculture.
