Religiosity, conservatism and political apathy of the peasantry in Portugal
| Resumo: | The author analyses the political-ideological functions of conservation of the social order usually imputed to the peasantry, trying to demonstrate, with the support of empirical information concerning the religious and political-electoral of the Portuguese population in general and the municipality of Penafiel in particular, that: a) to characterize the system of arrangements and practical-symbolic operators that are the basis of certain behaviours and ideological attitudes of peasant classes, it is necessary to take the specificity of social rural space into account (namely of the processi of work and production relations characteristic of the peasant economy); b) within the set of socialization institutions that tend to reinforce the spontaneous conservatism of the peasant classes, the Religion stands out; c) since the conservatism and the religious conformism of peasants are associated with a considerable predisposition to the self-exclusion as to the realty political dynamics, the data concerning the electoral sociography can be used, only with precaution, as indicators of the peasant ideologies; d) it is the development itself of the external economic functions of the rural space that tend to subvert its traditional political-ideological functions, as well as, similarly, the cohesion and the global sense of important social balances (in special those that are supported by the intrafamily systems of the division of work and authority and by the solidarity of the neighbourhood). |
