The social challenge of demographic ageing

Ver documento

Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:Demographic ageing in Portuguese society is an undeniable tendency with important repercussions on many areas of collective life. This is the subject being studied here. In the first part, demographic ageing of the population in Portugal is presented as a distinguishing characteristic of this century and a process which will continue into the 21st century. In the second part, the effects of demographic ageing on society are considered, with a description, using some examples, of how this evolution of the age structure can threaten the balance of society. Finally, consideration is given to the possibility of an alternative (less pessimistic) scenario if, today, we are made aware of the imperative need for society to adapt to demographic conditionalism, which entails reviewing the social significance of old age.
