Foreign investments, finantial policy and railways in Portugal in the second half of the nineteenth century
| Resumo: | The building of railways in Portugal in the second half of the nineteenth century is lastingly linked with the external economic dependency: a direct dependency in the foundation of enterprises or in their financing through the external state deficit and a more acute form of dependency, i.e. the kind of economic growth in which the building of railways is inserted and to which it contributes. The author has been engaged in a research intented to be based in an analysis of the large pile of the existing documents, with the purpose of making clear the set of problems concerning the railway building. The study of the financing forms, the nationality and the groups with which the undertakers were connected represented the second phase of a work the initial difficulty of which was to disentangle the different entities in presence and their relation with the State. The third phase, to which the present article corresponds exactly, was that of the division into periods, each period being characterized after the elements underlined previously while one has collected the maximum of statistical data from that time. The chronological limits of this article correspond to those of the research work and one has only broached the important period from 1876 till 1891, that is a considerable enlargement of the railway network. It ends with the greatest crisis suffered by the enterprises and the society as a whole. |
