Bibliographic Details
Summary:In his analysis of modern fiction, Jacques Rancière challenges Roland Barthes’ classic study of the effect of reality in literature. Seeking to account for the political dimension involved in literary realism’s excessive descriptions, Rancière makes use of the term ‘equality effect’. Taking this concept into consideration, this article aims to examine the forms of realization of this ‘aesthetic democracy’ in the cinema of Alain Resnais. More specifically, it analyzes how the film Hiroshima mon amour (1959) gives rise to another division of the sensible by questioning the categorization of cinematographic genres and the hierarchy of the work’s themes.
